Functional rehab can be best explained as improving quality of motion (proper sequence of muscle movement), stretching, and active exercise program that increase range of motion, increase strength, decrease pain, and increase activity levels of daily living. Structural Rehab can be defined as programs of exercise, stretching, and traction that change the posture and spine towards normal 3-D aligment.
Correct aligment and balance is important for fucntion. When there are mis alignments in the spinal column abnormal postures and muscular imbalances occur decreasing funciton. Stresses such as gravity and strains being put on the spinal column cannot be overcome and degeneration ensues. Most therapists and chiropractors focus on pain relief and function but fail to acknowledge spinal alignments. At Bafford Chiropractic, we focus on both functional and the structural components.

Hello, my name is Dr. Jon Bafford and I am a chiropractic physician in Newark Ohio. I treat patients in the surronding areas such as Heath, Granville, Hebron, Utica, Johnstown, and even Columbus. Today, I will be writing what exactly is a chiropractor.
Chiropractic is a system of healthcare that treats subluxations of the spine. A subluxationis a mis-alignment in the spinal column that can cause stress to the soft tissue and distortion to the nerves, muscles, discs and ligaments. Subluxations can also cause strain and strain to the joints and if left undetected may cause disc,problems, joint degeneration and even nerve interference affecting organs and systems. Subluxations can be caused from different forms of stress, such as emotional, chemical, and physical such as trauma, physical activity and poor ergonomics.
Chiropractic is the only profession in the world that treats subluxations which helps decrease pain and help restore function to the joints of spine without the use of medication or evasive procedures. Subluxations can be individual mis-alignments of the spine or global mis-alignments such asforward head posture which is usually mis-alignment of the entire neck. Imagine a 10 person row team and one of the team members start to row differently from the rest of the group or just rows at a different pace. This puts more stress and strain to the adjacent team members. Function is lost, and when function is lost joints of the spine, surrounding tissue and joints start to break down causing injury and eventually pain. |
